Except for a bout of colic early on, Clare, my firstborn, has been incredibly easy. Not long after she was born I whispered into her ear, “Please love me when you’re sixteen.” She turns sixteen in about seven months and she and I remain very close. So far; so good.

“The world’s most agreeable baby”, Andrew developed a temper at eighteen months. Every day was his “the worst day ever”. We laugh about it now and Andrew, calmer but still occasionally volatile, cringes at tales of his tantrums. I wouldn’t change him for the world. Andrew, my second-born, my son.
