Hawkeye 77 x 365

Before there was affordable housing on the corner of Highland and McLean, part of the land was farmed by a man called Hawkeye. Whenever we’d see him working among the rows of vegetables we’d holler, in singsong voices, “Hi Hawkeye”. He would then stop working and wave. It never failed.

Was this intersection near railroad tracks? These street names are bringing up mists of memory. However, the year I lived in Elgin, I was in a group house on Highland, a big Victorian.

No railroad tracks nearby.

There are lots of big Victorians on Highland though - there used to be on on this property, but that was when I was still in elementary school.

McLean is pretty far west -- farther than most of the Victorians go. You may have been nearer Larkin and Highland - there is a tricky pointy 3-way intersection there. (But still no railroad tracks).

I think there are railroad tracks near Rt. 31. (email me and we'll puzzle it out)
