Devin lived on the corner in the red house with the ancient apple tree in the yard. She was sneaky-mean and made us play her way. Once she dared me to touch an electric line when we climbed a tree across the street. I’m lucky it was a telephone line instead.

George, Tim ’s friend from Columbia, Maryland , must have often worn clothes that matched because I called him color-coordinated. He replied: everyone who lived in that planned community was color-coordinated – it was a rule. I now live about thirty minutes from Columbia and, still think of it as Color Coordinated Columbia.
