Firstborn daughter in a family of 5 depression-era children, my mom grew up too fast. Engaged by 16, married by 18 mom at 15 or 16and a mother by 20 she never really learned who she was. At 70 she’s stuck as nursemaid to my tantrum-prone, dementia-ridden father. Will she ever get a chance?

George, Tim ’s friend from Columbia, Maryland , must have often worn clothes that matched because I called him color-coordinated. He replied: everyone who lived in that planned community was color-coordinated – it was a rule. I now live about thirty minutes from Columbia and, still think of it as Color Coordinated Columbia.
